HA5 Task3 - Final Illustration Presentation

For the final illustration presentation I have used all my exploratory drawings which have been displayed and explained in the previous tasks, to create the final presentation for the concept art.

Character
Using the approval concept art which I created for task 2. I started to plan out what colours my character was going to be for instance what colour skin, clothes and texture. I analysed and generated ideas on which colour etc was going to best suit the characters personality - Mainly focusing on the character being a traveler and a thief. I have already previously gone into detail on why I choose the style outfit in task 2. But In the illustration stage most of my focus was going into the detail and colours of the character. 

As you can see to the right I have dressed the character in bright, noticeable colours. 
I choose these colours because travelers stereotypical like to have outfits which attract attention and make them stick out from the other travelers. I also know travelers in the medieval times did earn/steal an reasonable amount of valuable goods and seen as my character is a thief I wanted to give him an wealthy but almost 'dirty' Sort of appearance. I used watercolor pencils On a hard, cardboard A3 paper. I used watercolors the water colours dry because I believe its more easier to blend the colours together giving me more of an opportunity to get the colours I wanted to achieve. For instance for the jacket of the character I began with blue and green then used white to blend them colours together then In the light I added light blue and in the shadows dark green which then I blended in with white to give an smooth and blended effect. I used this technique with all of the presentation concept art to help blend the colours together. This artwork took an overall 3 hours to finish.


Setting
Using the same technique as In the character final concept art technique where I shade/blend several colours using an water colour pencil pallet, I tried to achieve an setting which I personally think it looks like a dark, gloomy dungeon setting. For instance The setting mostly involves colours such as brown, dark brown, gray, Black, Dark blue, Dark purple (shadows), White and that is about it. I wanted to give it an gloomy, old look so I didn't want to involve any bright colours such as bright orange, pink etc. I tried to give an appearance so that the textures inside the setting can be noticed for instance I wanted to give the  stretching table, barrels and doors an wood effect by using browns, blacks, oranges & yellows in a 'cross hatching' technique to give an effect off old, splinter/oak wood. This artwork took an approximately an hour and half/2 hours to complete although I found it much easier because I used an different sheet as an 'pallet' to figure out which colours best suited the setting/texture. 


objects
For the objects I used the same watercolors/technique which I have previously explained as well as two hard/card board A3 pieces of paper. I wanted an old/wealthy appearance for my weapons  because A travelers/thief main pride is their weapons so i wanted the colours to be bright, eye catching and easily seen to show some sort of wealth. It took me an estimate of an half  hour/hour for each of the concept arts to be complete. 




My other object which was the players card is used in a different technique for example i didnt use the watercolors and used ordinary pencil colors and a black Biro pen. This overall took me half hour/hour to complete. 


Finally I  combined my work together into a poster montage so its easier to see all the final illustrations In a presented format. 


HA5 Task2 - Development Studies

By reflecting on my Ha3 drawing portfolio I have Identified the media and the different techniques that I personally think helps me the most to get the highest quality art work with the best time efficiency.
This technique is usually the secondary observation for example looking at images or even an object and drawing that with pencil on a A4 piece of paper. Although I dont want my concept art to be similar to other images which I am using as an reference as I want it to be my own work and unique. So when using the secondary observation technique I have decided to look at 4 or 5 different images for ideas and taking inspiration for face, clothes, shoes etc from different images as well as changing the features to how I want it to look on my concept art. 


Exploration
In the exploration stage I am drawing the characters, Setting and the weapons using a A3 piece of paper and an HB pencil.  In the exploration stage it is quick sketches which dont include full detail or have to be 100% accurate. (This is explained fully on HA5 - Task 1)
At this stage I am generating Ideas and creating different options which I can use for the concept art although the drawings are not  as detailed and have an 'rough', 'scruffy' effect to the drawing this is exactly how I wanted to generate the ideas - Fast and easy. I did this simply because it allowed my self to increase the ideas for the settings, character and equipment in under and hour. I Then Asked several people which Sketch they liked the most which I then looked over/Picked to turn into an approval concept art image.

Character

For the character exploration stage I split an A3 size off paper In 4 and the orientated the paper so it was portrait and not landscape. As you can see the drawings are sketched fast and dont have much detail for example their faces are blank. I did this because I wanted the sketches of the character be quite simple and not focus on the detail or the body proportion for instance focusing more on the top half of the character and not the legs etc. I did this because I wanted to focus more on the layering and position of the arms. For instance In the first drawing (Top left) the arms are in a different position than In the other drawings. I also went for a hood and curly hair in that drawing other than a hat. The second sketch was more of an 'fancy' look, The position the character is in is quite simple but the clothing is going to include a lot of layers, belts, scarfs and bags as well as a feathered hat. The third drawing was a simple look. It was a normal standing position with just 2 layers as well as one or two belts and the weapons being hold In the hands other than belts etc. The fourth character also had a posh/fancy look due to the position for instance the character is standing with one arm resting on his waist and the other resting on his chest. Hes wearing a thick coat/layers with a feather hat.

Setting
In this image their is four different sketches of what the setting may look like. As you can see each setting has an different layout. Some focused on an certain area or some open area. As you can see in the top left section the main attention is a big gate and then torture devices in the middle and the back wall being decorated in medieval objects/Torture whips etc. The top right drawing is mainly focused on an torture area with an prison cell to the far back. The bottom left is centered in an opening room, there is a wide wall with a door in the background and two prison cells on a large wall to the right. In the middle of the layout there will be several decoration items as well as an 'body stretch' torture device and an body hanging device in the background. The bottom right setting is an setting which has an high angle point off view, the main attention will be on a prisoner chained up in a dungeon room including several torture devices such as head lock and dog collars to chain up their prisoners. 


Object
I sketched out four sketches off what the layout of the pistol and the sword which will be used as weapons by my character. As you can see there isn't much detail In the drawings and this is because I wanted to focus more on the outside and the  outline than the detail in the weapon. I want the weapon to be classic and have an 'old' look to it although I want the detail to be aye catching and have an image of old but almost expensive and a luxury to have. 






I also sketched out what the characters playing cards was going to look like. I did this really quickly, hardly putting in any detail within the drawing although doing it quickly allowed me to generate a few ideas and give me more of an vision on what the characters cards will look like. 







Approval
In the approval stage I am using equipment such as an HB led pencil, A4 paper, rulers and rubbers. At this stage everything is still quite simple although It has a lot more detail than in the Exploration stage for instance this stage I am basically doing my outlines to use as an template for the promotion/last stage.

Character

For the character I used an HB pencil and on a piece of card paper. As you can see in the image to the right there is an grid off the progress of how I got my final drawing. In the picture the image as you can tell in the drawing to the left you can see how I used ovals to plan out the body shape for instance ovals where the waste, head, arms and leg was going to be. My second step was basically outlining the outfit, I wanted to go for a 'royal' but as well as an distressed look.  The final step was the face- I wanted the face to be symmetrical with only a small, trimmed looking beard. I wanted an elegant hat to match the outfit for instance using an feather as an feature on the hat although I didn't want my character too look to 'done up' I wanted to give him an rough look as well as a good appearance so I put an bandanna on him to help give him my desired look which In my opinion suits the setting and the characters personality for example He is an thief and travels so he is most probably going to look rough due to the stress he may need to go through for him to steal his goods. For traveling sea I wanted to give him several layers and sort of an 'elegant/Rough' to show that being a thief/traveler can be rough and stressful but it can as well be rewarding such as having merchandise such as nice clothing and weapons. Overall I this drawing took an estimated time off hour and half to do an complete drawing.



Setting

Using the four sketches I did in the exploration stage I choose the 3rd sketch as an base idea simply because I Preferred the layout. I started to sketch the layout and the doors first before I started to add detail because I wanted to make sure I had space for the devices and equipment which I want to include within the setting. As you can see in the image below, the approval setting has a lot of changes than In the exploration sketches. For example there Is not two cells and just one large one on the right wall and I also put a lot more detail into the objects and walls than I did in the first stage. To find inspiration for the devices, walls and the decoration I have used in the settings I looked at the reference images in task 1 but I also looked at real life videos and photographs which gave me more of an idea on what to draw in the corners of the page and add more detail to get the right effect of an dark and gloomy dungeon.  



Object
Using the sketches and the reference images from HA5 Task 1 I have created a pistol and sword approval drawing using a HB pencil and a rubber on a A3 card piece of paper.  

On the sword Object I have included an close up of the skull and the pattern on the swords handle. This is because I wanted to make the objects as eye catching as possible for instance the close up allows me to show detail up close to the sword.

The third object I drew from using the reference images and the sketches which are above Is the players cards. I wanted to go for an old medieval playing cards although Most of the detail will vbe added in the next stage you can easily see that the players cards have an old, weird look unlike the modern cards we have now. On the left in the image is the front of the card and next to the card is the back of the cards including an Ace.








HA5 Task1 - Reference Research

This task is going to include visual and written reference images that will help me with inspiration for the concept art which is going to be created for the setting, character and equipment. 

Setting
The setting is going to be based in a Castle dungeon during medieval times. The Dungeon is going to be dark, gloomy, dirty, damp and is going to be brick heavy walls with a lot of objects including torture and interrogation devices. 

In this image I like the layout of the dungeon and the colors for instance its easy to see the shadows. I also like the torture devices In this image as well as the bones and cages hanging from the ceiling. 



I love the detail of the walls and the torches in this image. I think it gives an creepy but interesting effect which I Personally think will fit in well with my setting for the concept art.

Im going to use this image as an reference image because I do like the layout, I like how the gate and room looks because it gives an great effect for the shadowing plus it gives the room more of an interesting look. I think It does this by giving the gate and a room both attention in detail for example not making the room just the main priority but also showing how dark, dirty and gloomy the dungeon rooms are.http://www.kingkostasart.com/work/

Character
The character in my medieval setting is a travelling con man who travels the world by the sea.

Body/clothing

In this section I am collecting refrence images which gives me inspiration for the characters body shape and clothing.










I like the layers in clothing in this image although for my character I would want the colours to be more bright to give the look more dimension and look more like an 'traveler would do'
